Have you ever known how skateboarding came to be a sport? The history of it is quite interesting. It started out in the 1950’s and many believed it would just be one more passing fad that people took part in. While it has had peaks and valleys since its introduction, skateboarding has proven it is much more than just a passing fad.

The first skateboard was quite different from today’s skateboard. They offered a handle bar on them, just like many types of scooters that we see on the market today. This handle bar is what allowed these early skateboards to be maneuvered and controlled. However, it didn’t take long for the idea to remove the handle bar to come along. Many believe this early idea was the result of the popularity of surf boarding at the time.

By the 1960’s, the most popular one was the Roller Derby Skateboard. It was actually introduced in 1959 just ahead of the competitors. However, it took many of these companies to keep up with the demand for them. It is estimated that between 1960 and 1963 more than 50 million skateboards were sold. When the skateboarding official contests were started by manufacturers in 1963 it only further fueled the frenzy to have one. So what happened that slowed down the craze for skateboards? There are two main reasons that cause the sales down. First, the economic status of the United States began to slow down so people weren’t able to buy as many extras as before. Second, many so called experts out there were talking about how unsafe skateboards were.

Snowboarding is basically surfing but on snow rather than on water. Snowboarding started around the 1960′s but really made itself known with its debut at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Japan. Since then it has become one of the fastest growing sports with over 7 million people participating in the United States alone.

Snowboarding is a winter sport and is therefore difficult to participate in at any other time due to lack of snow. There are many ski resorts that now have slopes that are for snowboarding only so for those interested in trying out snowboarding ski resorts are a good place to start.

The main styles of snowboarding are ‘freeride’ and ‘freestyle’ with ‘freecarve’ also being quite popular.

Freeride

This is the most common style of snowboard riding and probably the easiest. It is the style that you want to be doing if you are a beginner as it is simply just riding down a mountain. Whether it is the mildest of slopes or the steepest of slopes if you are just doing a straight ride down the slope then it is a freeride.

A rider however can use some tricks while riding freeride if he chooses by using any natural terrain that may be on the slope he is riding on.

Free ride, freestyle and free carve are the main styles of snowboarding. They all are adopted at varying pace by snowboarding enthusiasts. In freestyle, you can find manmade obstacles placed in the path and the snowboarders manoeuvring over the obstacles with much agility and flexibility. Seeing the action is quite an interesting thing, with the riders going past at a good speed and performing gravity defying stunts.

Often compared to Parachutist. the only other magazine for skydivers. Skydiving Magazine offers more regional news. safety and performance articles. Since Parachutist is published by United States Parachute Association (USPA). the agency which governs skydiving in the United States. it tends to focus more on USPA events and news. technical articles. and regulations. Skydiving tends to cover competitions more fully and also provides information on non-regulation subjects. The coverage of nonconformist skydiving techniques has created a following of enthusiasts that enjoy other versions of this extreme sport.

One major advantage of Skydiving Magazine is it is the only widely distributed source of information on BASE jumping and BASE events as USPA does not recognize BASE jumping. BASE is an acronym for Building. Antennae. Span. and Earth and represents fixed objects from which jumps are made. Because BASE jumping is very dangerous and often illegal. it is not only disparaged in general. but frowned upon by USPA. This makes Skydiving Magazine a leader in this area of the sport.

The primary distinguishing characteristic of Skydiving Magazine is its print style. Skydiving is printed on enlarged tabloid style paper with a non-slick finish. More like a newspaper than a magazine. Skydiving is often criticized as having inferior picture quality and inadequate color due to this type of printing. However. many prefer this style as it maintains a traditional design and. because of its shorter production cycle. remains the most current in news and equipment information. Either way. if the publishing style is objectionable. it is not apparent in the record number of magazines that are sold every month to ardent readers.
