Have you ever known how skateboarding came to be a sport? The history of it is quite interesting. It started out in the 1950’s and many believed it would just be one more passing fad that people took part in. While it has had peaks and valleys since its introduction, skateboarding has proven it is much more than just a passing fad.

The first skateboard was quite different from today’s skateboard. They offered a handle bar on them, just like many types of scooters that we see on the market today. This handle bar is what allowed these early skateboards to be maneuvered and controlled. However, it didn’t take long for the idea to remove the handle bar to come along. Many believe this early idea was the result of the popularity of surf boarding at the time.

By the 1960’s, the most popular one was the Roller Derby Skateboard. It was actually introduced in 1959 just ahead of the competitors. However, it took many of these companies to keep up with the demand for them. It is estimated that between 1960 and 1963 more than 50 million skateboards were sold. Keep in mind that we didn’t have the technology that we have today in order to mass produce such items in large buildings.

When the skateboarding official contests were started by manufacturers in 1963 it only further fueled the frenzy to have one. So what happened that slowed down the craze for skateboards? There are two main reasons that cause the sales down. First, the economic status of the United States began to slow down so people weren’t able to buy as many extras as before. Second, many so called experts out there were talking about how unsafe skateboards were.

However, there were plenty of people that were taking a new interest in skateboards by the early 1970’s. This was due to the introduction of a variety of great moves and tricks. This added a new dimension to skateboarding that hadn’t been there in the past. Now there was much more involved with it all than just simply riding a skateboard. Many of the top competitors out there took things to the extremes and continued to push the limits.

In 1974 a huge change too place regarding the size of the skateboards. Up to this point the standard was either 6 or 7 inches in width. It now became 9 inches which consumers were very pleased with. These additional few inches offered riders more stability and that meant it was easier for them to control regardless of what they liked to do on their skateboard.

The availability of ramps and other materials that skaters could use at home in the 1980’s kept the trend of skateboarding going strong. Now people didn’t have to rely upon just skate parks for them to enjoy. However, you also had an abundance of city ordinances around this same time. Many of them prohibited the use of skateboards on public sidewalks and streets.

As a result, the sales did dip into the 1990’s. Yet once again the idea of skateboarding was thriving. Many believe it had to do with the availability of the internet. People could view plenty of skateboarding action online. At the same time the sporting channel ESPN took on this sport as well.

One thing is for sure, skateboarding has enough of a following that it is here to stay. It is fun to look back at where it has been though over the years. What is also exciting is to speculate about what the future holds for the sport of skateboarding. With the worldwide presence it has, there is always plenty going on concerning it.

More and more people are getting enthusiastic about rock climbing and the sport is now gaining popularity and attracting thousands of sports enthusiasts. Rock climbing is categorized and each type has different features and methods. These activities are termed Mountaineering, Ice climbing, Bouldering, Indoor climbing and Rock climbing etc.

If you are adventurous enough and wish to climb a rock, but not sure about the techniques involved in rock climbing, then indoor climbing can be a better option for you. Indoor climbing is an easy way to learn various techniques involved in rock climbing under the guidance of experienced and professional climbers. These man made climbing walls are designed in such a way that they resemble the characteristics of the natural rock environment. This indoor climbing experience is really exciting and due to this many rock climbers don’t even opt for the outdoors. Obviously there is no comparison to outdoor rock climbing and those who are adventurous and enjoy the thrill always choose outdoor rock climbing.

Various rock climbing opportunities are available for those who do venture outdoors. However, there is an initial approach that involves various aspects related to the rock you opt to climb. To start with, first you need to decide how to tackle and surmount the rock face horizontally or vertically. Secondly, ensure that rock chosen is solid and stable. Equally important are the weather conditions, so select locations where the weather is predictable.
Being adventurous is good but not at the cost of your life. Rock climbing can be a dangerous sport if safety precautions are not followed. So check if all your climbing equipment is in a good state. Most of the climbers prefer the less crowded areas and venture further in such terrain. But please note that in case of an emergency situation you need to get immediate help.

There is a common belief that most of the rock climbers are injured because of falling. Though it is a fact, but there are always rescue squads and the local authorities who step in on time. The media immediately covers these accidents. However, rock climbing is not associated only with falling. Other injuries also occur while climbing like damage to the hands, tendons, elbows and shoulders, due to straining and overuse. So to reduce these injuries, it is recommended that you exercise. A proper warm up and stretching out the body can help you tremendously to prevent such injuries.

You should wear the appropriate shoes for climbing. It should have a proper grip so as to prevent you from falling. Most of the climbers avoid wearing helmets, but they are must to prevent serious head injuries. Ensure that all the equipment like climbing ropes, webbing, carabiners and belay devices etc are in excellent condition before you plan to climb. These climbing basics can help you to avoid the accidents and make your climbing adventure safe.

Snowboarding is the ultimate thrill you can achieve on the slopes; surfers, windsurfers and skaters are guilty to have inspired this sport and everyone else seems to be following the example. While there are no restriction on who can practice snowboarding, there are some differences between snowboards for girls and those that are for boys.

The Differences In The Snowboards For Girls And Boys
The difference is not in the practice of the sport itself but only in the snowboard and that is the size of the snowboard, which is smaller in the case of the one for girls. There is no restriction in the case that a girl wishes to use a boy’s snowboard however, it is suggested girls use snowboards for girls for the following reasons: the size and the weight.
While some girls are able to handle a heavier, larger snowboard, other girls who are medium height and weight find it difficult; therefore the snowboard for girls is lighter and considerably smaller.
Like surfing, snowboarding is a sport that is based on nature and when you are on a slope, flying through the winds on the tip of the snow, any extra weight or size can bring you down. The snowboard, like the surfing board, becomes one with the rider and, therefore, it needs to be proportionate with the same.

Finding The Right Snowboard For You
If you are shopping for your first snowboard, you may want to first weigh yourself and ensure you know your height before you go to the store to buy or rent, for these are the two criteria by which you should consider purchasing your snowboard.
Try and rent a snowboard at first to see the difference between snowboards for girls and boys as well as to get a grip of the sport. Only after that, you might be ready to purchase your first snowboard.

Other Essential Snowboarding Equipment
In order to make snowboarding a safe sport you will need to ensure you have the right equipment, as well, besides the snowboard itself and that is: the helmet which will protect your head in case of a fall, padding for your knees, hips and well as elbows as those are the areas most prone to getting hurt in case you may fall, the snowboarding suit, which is similar to the skiing suit and the gloves to protect your hands.
Additional to the above mentioned items, you will need glasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the snow as well as the wind blowing directly in your eyes.
Enjoy a unique sport, which will bring you excitement and fun.

It’s perfectly acceptable and, actually, highly recommended to take a surfing lesson when you’re just picking up the sport. You might think surfing is logical and that you will have the natural ability to pick it up right away, but the reality is that surfing is a very awkward sport when you first start out and there are tons of little tips that you can acquire only from a surf instructing professional.

Surf lessons can be private or in groups and last for about an hour. You will likely ride on a completely foam board that is nearly 10 feet long and very lightweight, which catches waves easily and gives you a lot of float. Most surf schools guarantee that you will stand up on a wave. If you don’t, you can usually come back for another lesson for free until you do. It might appear unnecessary and dorky, but a beginning surf lesson will likely accelerate your surfing ability more than the trial and error of learning on your own. If you go it alone, your learning curve will likely be slower, more painful, and in some cases more dangerous.

Another thing you must keep in mind is that friends who surf are not the same as surf instructors. Some of your friends may have been surfing for years, but if you ask them to go surfing with you to help you learn, they could well be worse than your least favorite middle school teacher. You and your experienced surfing friends might paddle out together, but your friends might leave you treading water at the lineup while they’re catching all the waves.

That’s why you are much better off shelling out the $50 or so for a first lesson. Surf instructors get paid to answer questions and push you into a wave. Their main goal is for you to have a good time while riding your first wave. To take full advantage of the time you have with your instructor, it is advisable to prepare a list of questions you can ask. There’s no limit to the silly or stupid questions you can ask a surf instructor, so fire away.

Surf instructors take their students to beginner surf breaks that are usually a bit crowded. This will be a most humbling experience, but you will be among others who are in the same boat as you. One thing is for certain: Wherever it is you go with your instructor, he or she won’t paddle you out to a break that you can’t handle, so you know you will be safe and taken care of. For this reason, surf lessons ensure that you will paddle back out another day wanting more. Goodness knows you don’t want to be in over your head or get injured and be too scared to try the sport again. So start off on the right foot by taking one surf lesson. Once you get that initial lesson out of the way, you’ll feel far more confident going it alone thereafter.

Normally, climbers use gear and safety equipment specifically designed for the purpose. Strength, endurance, and mental control are required to cope with tough, dangerous physical challenges, and knowledge of climbing techniques and the use of essential pieces of gear and equipment are crucial.

History

Although the practice of rock climbing was an important component of Victorian mountaineering in the Alps, it is generally thought that the sport of rock climbing began in the last quarter of the nineteenth century in various parts of Europe. Rock climbing evolved gradually from an alpine necessity to an athletic sport in its own right. As rock climbing matured, grading systems were created in order to more accurately compare relative difficulties of climbs. Over the years, both climbing techniques, and the equipment climbers use to advance the sport, have evolved in a steady fashion.

Over the years, both climbing techniques, and the equipment climbers use to advance the sport, have evolved in a steady fashion.

Protection: spring-loaded or static metal devices designed to be inserted into rock cracks or other irregular surfaces. Protection is placed as the climber ascends; the climber clips the rope into the protection. The protection works in tandem with the belayer to prevent the climber from hitting the ground in the event of a fall.

Belay:

Harness:

Overview:

Climbers usually work in pairs, with one climbing and the other belaying. In lead climbing, the belayer feeds rope to the lead climber through a belay device. The leader climbs up, occasionally placing protection or clipping preplaced bolted hangers, until the top is reached. The belayer is ready to “lock off” the rope if the leader falls.

Both climbers attach the rope to their climbing harness, usually tying into their harness with a figure-eight knot or double bowline knot. The leader either places protection or clips into permanent protection already attached to the rock. In traditional climbing, the protection is removable. Usually nuts or Spring-loaded camming device (often referred to as “cams” or “friends”) are set in cracks in the rock (although pitons are sometimes used). In sport climbing the protection is metal loops called hangers. Hangers are secured to the rock with either expanding masonry bolts taken from the construction industry, or by placing glue-in bolt systems. In ice climbing the protection is Ice Screw or similar devices hammered or screwed into the ice by the leader, and removed by the second climber.

The lead climber typically connects the rope to the protection with carabiners or quickdraws. If the lead climber falls, he will fall twice the length of the rope out from the last protection point, plus rope stretch (typically 5% to 8% of the rope out), plus slack. If any of the gear breaks or pulls out of the rock or if the belayer fails to lock off the belay device immediately, the fall will be significantly longer. Thus if a climber is 2 meters above the last protection he will fall 2 meters to the protection, 2 meters below the protection, plus slack and rope stretch, for a total fall of over 4 meters.

If the leader falls, the belayer arrests the rope. This is achieved by running the rope through a belay device attached to the belayer’s harness. The belay device runs the rope through a series of sharp curves that, when operated properly, greatly increase the friction and stop the rope from running. Some of the more popular types of belay devices are the ATC Belay Device, the Figure 8 and various auto-locking belay devices such as the Petzl Gri-Gri

At the top of the pitch, the leader sets up a secure anchor system, also called a belay, from where he can belay as his partner climbs. The second climber removes the gear from the rock (traditional climbing) or removes the quickdraw from the bolted hanger (sport climbing). Both climbers are now at the top of the pitch with all their equipment. Note that the second is protected from above while climbing, but the leader is not, so being the leader is more challenging and dangerous. After completing their climb, with both climbers at the top of the pitch, they must eventually rappel or otherwise descend the climb in order to return to their starting point.

Occasionally, climbers may decide to “move together”, a risky but speedy technique also called simul-climbing, in which both leader and second move at the same time without stopping to belay. The leader – approximately a rope length above the second – usually places multiple pieces of protection as he climbs so that the weight of the second climber might arrest a possible leader’s fall. Should it be the second climber to fall, however, the leader may be pulled from his holds, with potentially unpleasant results.

Choosing the perfect skateboard can be an exciting experience. But before you jump right in and buy one, you need to make sure that you do your research. There are some very impressive skateboards on the market today that feature amazing graphics, and some have even been designed by professional skateboarders themselves. It is important to do your homework and decide exactly what features you want before making a final purchase.

Realizing your own unique skating style will help you decide which type of skateboard is right for you. Some skaters prefer longer boards, while others swear by wider boards. You also need to keep in mind that your size also plays a part in what size of skateboard you will need. In general, the more the skater weighs, the heavier the deck of the skateboard needs to be. Another good tip to follow is that beginners usually start with wider boards.

You can compare skateboards and accessories at several places online, or browse through skateboard specialty shops to find the perfect board for you. If you are just beginning in the sport, you may not want to start out with the most expensive board to practice with. Not everyone decides to continue with the sport once they have tried it, so you do not want to be out too much money if you decide to quit skateboarding.

Reading online reviews about different types of skateboards is also a good idea. Quality is so important with skateboards. You want to make sure that the manufacturer’s claims are true. It is important to get the best quality skateboard you can afford. Even with daily use, a good quality skateboard should last between six months to a year. Skateboards can become expensive, so you do not want to replace boards any more than you have to.

While many people find that purchasing a skateboard online is less expensive than purchasing one from a local skateboard shop, there are advantages to purchasing locally. By purchasing from your local shop, you are able to actually get a feel of the board making sure it will work for you before purchasing it. If the skateboard is not what you want, the savings you might have gotten online won’t matter.

If you do decide to go ahead and order online, do not forget to review the return policy well. If you are not able to return your skateboard for a refund if you find that it does not work for your skateboarding needs, you will be out that much money. Make sure that the company you are ordering from has a liberal return policy before buying!

There are many affordable skateboards on the market that will work great. Or, if you are really dedicated to the sport and have the money to invest, you may consider having a skateboard custom built to your specifications. By setting a budget and researching several different styles and designs of skateboards before making a purchase, you will insure that you will have a skateboard that should give you months of use and accentuate your personal style.

Rock climbing can be divided into two main types i.e. indoor and outdoor rock climbing. There are a variety of styles of rock climbing. Two of the most common styles are: The Traditional and Sport style. Rock climbers use other styles too. Most of them prefer to use the style that suits them the best. This article will provide you with the different styles of rock climbing and its features.
Traditional style:
Traditional rock climbing is also commonly known amongst climber as trad climbing. A traditional rock climber is known as trad climber. This style involves exploration and establishment of new routes. This style requires a lot of skill including self control, gear placement, route finding, down hill climbing, etc. This style came into existence before the sport style of climbing. This style is unaided with permanent anchors to help while ascending. It is more physically and mentally challenging than sport climbing. A trad climber uses a rope and places nuts and hexes in crevices to ensure safety.
Sport style:
Sport style of climbing unlike traditional climbing lets the climber use permanent anchors for protection. These anchors are fixed to the rock face to assist the climb. Sport climbing requires gymnastics abilities, endurance and strength. Sport climbing is safer compared to traditional climbing. The gear too is different. It includes bolts and quick draws i.e. a small sling, which has carabiners on both ends. Sport climbing can be both indoor as well as outdoor. Indoor sport climbing developed because climbers wanted to practice climbing throughout the year.
Bouldering:
This style of climbing requires the climber to have great strength, endurance and concentration. The climber needs to use all these skills to work a way through the boulder route. This style is more dangerous and requires experience. This style is practiced indoors as well as the outdoors. While bouldering, climbers usually do not get their feet a couple of feet above the ground surface. Bouldering does not include any ropes or belay placed at the bas of the cliff. The only gear required for this type of rock climbing is shoes, crash pad and chalk. Bouldering involves a series of problems known as routes. These routes are series of moves a climber needs to practice over and over again. Additional moves will increase the challenge. It is advised that bouldering should not be done at great heights.
Solo style:
The solo climbing style is the most dangerous style of climbing. It is also considered by most of the climber as the freest style of climbing. This is so because the climbers climb alone i.e. without any partner, protection or rope. This style of climbing is best left to the experts. The main aim of such a climb is to reach the summit.
Ice climbing:
As the name suggests, this style of rock climbing includes climbing on ice. One does not need to be told that it is going to a cold climb. Ice climbing means climbing a vertical wall of ice and this ice wall may be formed by a frozen waterfall. The tools required for ice climbing are quite different from the tools used in the other styles of climbs.

If you are water sports lover and are the adventurous type and want to spend your summer in the water, then wakeboarding is simply the perfect sport for you. Though this particular sport is rather new it has been well accepted and has also gained popularity within a very short period. This sport includes wakeboards and wake-ropes. The length of the wakeboard varies between 120 and 150 centimeters and the width ranges between 40 and 45 centimeters.

Various kinds of wakeboards:

If you are a beginner then you should start with longer wakeboards that come with square edges or square rails. These kinds of wakeboards are much more stable and trouble-free to control, whereas it is much easier to land with the round-edged wakeboards. Being round edged, these wakeboards allows you to gather speed much conveniently. They also provide quicker lifts during air tricks.

Some of the wakeboard riders also take the fins, rockers, design and the bindings of the board into consideration. The main function of the binding, which is also known as the boots, is to provide a secure attachment to the boards. These bindings also provide a comfortable support for your ankle as well as for your heel.

Wakeboard Ropes:

The ropes used for wakeboarding generally vary in length and elasticity. The normal length of a wake-rope ranges between 60 and 70 feet. Some of them are one-piece that come without any length adjustments, whereas others come with additional adjustment loops.

Wakeboard Towers:

These days, most of the wake boards come with wakeboard towers. In such boards the rope is s mounted on this tower, instead of being tied on the back of the boat. The length of the tower is usually 2 to 3 meters from the water level. These wakeboard towers help the riders to achieve a better pull and stability as well as allow them to gain more height while performing air tricks. They further provide supplementary space wakeboard speakers, for wakeboard racks, and lights.

Wakeboard Accessories:

There are several wakeboard accessories easily available in the market. These accessories add extra color and glamour to your wakeboards. You can attach wakeboard speakers to the towers which can be utilized to play music as well as to give instructions to the riders. You can also get waterproof covers for your wakeboard speakers. Wakeboard lights are in fact necessary if you want to show off your skills at night. Most of the handles come with rubber padding as they need to be comfortable to hold on. For the beginners it is essential to use wakeboard helmets for additional safety.

Tips for buying wakeboards:

• Before buying your own wakeboard study about them as much as possible. The boards and the equipments differ by levels of experience.
• Always consider your level of wakeboarding for your safety purpose.
• Get your bindings as well since most of them come without one.

Why it is important that a wakeboard floats?

Floating or buoyancy is a physics term that essentially means that the density and volume of an object placed in a fluid create a situation in which the object does not sink. Neutral buoyancy occurs when the objects mass is equal to the volume of the fluid displaced. Wakeboard construction has evolved over the past several years since its introduction as a sport in the early 1980’s. The first wakeboards were essentially just downsized surfboards that were designed to float on top of moving water. These old style wakeboards were difficult to master and inhibited many athletes from attempting the sport. Late in the 1980’s, neutral buoyancy wakeboards were introduced. Neutral buoyancy boards neither floats nor sink, which made the addition of bindings or foot attachment feasible. They also made it possible for riders to easily mount the boards while in the water. This development made the sport easier for beginners and more manageable for experienced wakeboarders to perform skilled maneuvers.

The importance of floating is important in several respects. First, of all the wakeboarding is a surface water sport. As silly as it may sound, if the wakeboard sank it would be very difficult to get the board up. If the board sank, you would not be able to stand or maintain your stance on top of the water. Second, wakeboards are attached to the rider through the use of not releasing bindings. A floating or neutrally buoyant board makes it possible for the rider to easily get into position to perform maneuvers. Another aspect important for floating wakeboards is the speed in which the sport takes place. Water skiing generally takes place at speeds of 25 to 30 miles per hour while wakeboarding takes place at speeds of 16 to 23 miles per hour. The slower speed makes it necessary for the object of the sport to float or semi-float whereas in water-skiing, the speed of the boat makes the rider rise up on top of the water. Very experienced wakeboarders sometimes operate at speeds of 23 to 25 miles per hour. Even small variations in the speed of the boat can drastically affect the shape of the wake created. In order to create the maximum wake at the slowest speed possible, special wake attachment or wake boats are available for use in the sport. As with any sport, safety is always an important factor. Wakeboards are specially engineered to ensure the protection and enjoyment of the wakeboard sport.
