There are several different kinds of rock climbing that people engage in for sport. Rock climbing first began to be recognized as a sport when it was independently developed from the rock climbing techniques of Victorian era mountaineering in the late eighteen hundreds. Over the years since then, a lot of specialized safety equipment and proven techniques for staying safe and making a secure, controlled ascent have been developed. However, the sport of rock climbing can still be split into two major divisions: free climbing and aid climbing. Free climbing uses only the natural features of the rock face being climbed, and is significantly more dangerous than climbing with the assistance of safety gear.

Even when safety gear is being used, however, many climbers try to follow the ethic that their climbing activities should not damage or change the surface of the rock face any more than is absolutely necessary. For some kinds of short distance rock climbing, such as bouldering, purists believe in free climbing assisted by some kind of pad on the ground to catch them if they fall. This allows them to climb without leaving marks in the rock. Cams are also a good way to climb without leaving too much of a mark on the surface, while driving spikes into the rock to use as handholds and places to tie rope lines is one of the more invasive ways of climbing.

Lead climbing is one of the most common types of rock climbing, where climbers go up in pairs and the lead (or topmost climber) is attached to the lower climber, or second, by a length of rope. Whoever is lowest at the moment is the second, and is in charge of belaying the rope, keeping the belaying system secured attached to the rock, and stopping the rope to keep the other climber from harm in case of a fall. While lead climbing, safety devices will usually be left on the mountain at regular intervals. For traditional lead climbing, these safety devices installed by the lead climber, will usually be removed by the second during the ascent. This leaves the climbing surface close to the way in which it was found, and leaves the same level of challenge and enjoyment for future climbers.

Top rope climbing is a variant on the two person climbing system where the one in charge of belaying the rope and keeping the system secure is at the top. The person at the top will place an anchor and help to hold the rope steady while the other climber makes his or her way upwards.

Not all rock climbing takes place outdoors ‘ indoor rock climbing is increasingly popular and is the way that many people start to get involved in the sport. Rock climbing walls with regular handholds can be built inside of a building to teach people climbing techniques and this style of climbing with holds on a wall is also sometimes used in sporting competitions and is a lot of fun in its own right.

Jumping from a plane meters above from land is not a safe sport as everybody may think. Skydiving poses that same feeling to anyone. In fact, skydiving safety has been better over the years.

Most skydiving fatalities and incidents are not caused by faulty equipment but failure to obey necessary precautions before jumping, like wrong timing of deploying the parachute, incorrect folding of the parachute and performing or experimenting with maneuvers that are extremely difficult and dangerous

The most common reasons for skydiving deaths and injuries, and that is 92 percent, are mistakes in judgment and procedure. This means that the jumper should be prepared well for the jump and do everything accurately to the time it takes until he reaches the ground.

Even in the process of signing up practice honesty. State or inform your skydiving instructors of any medical condition you are in. Saying that you have medical condition would not automatically stop you from skydiving, but absolutely doctor’s approval would be needed.

Before jumping, knowing and checking you gear is very important, however experienced or eager you are to make your first jump. Ensure the goggles, helmet and jumpsuit are all in good condition.

Parachute checks are also done before the jump. Parachutes are not always 100 percent safe, that’s why jumpers have a reserve parachute completely independent form the main chute. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that the reserve parachute be inspected and repacked every 120 days (whether it is used or not) by a FAA- certified parachute rigger.

Aside from the reserve parachute that can be used when the main chute is malfunctioning, the AAD is another safety device that skydivers are currently using. AAD stands for automatic activation device. The AAD automatically activate the jumper’s reserve parachute in the even that the jumper is disabled or disoriented or has lost track of the altitude and failed to deploy the main parachute.

The AAD was introduced by a German named Helmut Cloth. It was first called as CYPRESS or Cybernetic Parachute Release System. It used to be a student only device. During a free-fall, the CYPRESS uses computer interpreted barometric metering to constantly assess a skydiver’s altitude and rate of descent. If a skydiver is descending faster that a certain speed, this device will instantly activate the skydiver’s reserve.

Currently, the AAD is available for novice and expert skydivers. It has evolved into a compact, reliable and readily available for an average of $1200.

Other safety items that skydivers bring are visual and audible altimeters. When a person is skydiving, it is difficult to inform how close to the ground you are. Opening a parachute requires you to be at a specific altitude. Altimeters provide the altitude reading and even activate alarms whenever you have reached the height for releasing the parachute.

Aside from these issues with the equipment questioning how safe skydiving is, there are also several myths about skydiving that make people more afraid of it. An example of a skydiving myth is that divers cannot breathe during free fall which is totally untrue, since consciousness is needed to open the parachute.

Nobody would argue that skydiving is a safe thing to do. And statistics can be manipulated to make skydiving look very safe or very dangerous. Generally, safety in skydiving is determined by the individual. Rarely do skydiving accidents result from equipment failure or bad luck.

Where “general” or “traditional” camp programs have historically been the norm, specialty summer camp programs for kids and teens — which focus on one just one activity or a few related ones — are growing in popularity year after year. Nowhere is this more evident than along the southern California coastline, where surf camps are one of the fastest growing segments in the specialty camp sector. The increased interest in the sport, especially among children, has led to the proliferation of surf camps up and down the coast. Just take a stroll along the beaches of San Diego or Los Angeles and you’ll see group after group of happy campers learning to surf from their caring camp counselors and surfing instructors.

If your child has expressed an interest in learning to surf, sign him or her up for a summer surf camp experience!

But how can you tell you’re picking the right one?

When you choose a surf camp, it’s always wise to narrow your search down to one that’s earned accreditation by the American Camp Association. If a surf camp has achieved this status, it means the camp meets or exceeds up to 300 best-practice industry standards running the gamut from program and activity quality to camper safety to staffing and supervision and more.

If the surf camp you’re considering is not accredited by the American Camp Association, then you should ask the camp director why that’s the case. If you are not satisfied with the answer, it’s time to move on to the next surf camp.

Surf camp accreditation status is certainly not the only criteria to rely on when choosing a surf camp. You must also be sure the counselors and surfing instructors are experienced, qualified and have basic safety certifications in CPR, First Aid and lifeguarding. (While the ocean environment is tremendously fun, it demands respect, too. So you want to be certain your child is being instructed by capable and qualified staff who are equipped to handle any potential scenario that might come up, particularly with respect to your child’s safety at the beach.)

Concerning the individuals who will be supervising and teaching your child to surf, you want to choose a surf camp with experienced instructors who are caring, nurturing, and capable of teaching children of all ages, temperaments, and ability levels whether they are beginning, intermediate or advanced surfers.

You also want to make sure the surf camp incorporates a heavy dose of beach, water, and sun safety learning components into its program so your child gets them most well-rounded surf camp experience possible.

In addition, the surf camp should provide new equipment (including surfboards and wetsuits), and the camp program should take place only in ideal learning environments such as oceans with soft sandy bottoms and consistent wave activity.

In addition, there should be a public lifeguard supervising the surf camp program at all times.

Often overlooked in a parents’ search for a surf camp is to confirm whether the camp has a high profile sponsor connected to it. For example, if you choose a surf camp that is sponsored by Billabong or Quicksilver (which are huge companies and very well-respected in the surfing industry), you can be fairly certain you’re on the right track because these organizations will generally only attach their names to trusted surf camps with respectable camp programs.

We hope this article has helped you learn how to choose a surf camp.

Alternative sports like snowboarding or skateboarding have been growing in popularity of late. As a consequence, more and more products are available from manufacturers of equipment such as snowboards goggles or skateboards clothes. Snowboarding protective gear can be purchased from an online snowboarding shop, offering various types of brands and designs for those interested, including accessories like snowboards goggles. Outfits for skateboarders are also available, with a wide range of skateboards clothes to choose from. Protective gear is essential when practicing these sports, due to their dangerous nature, and this is why such devices are becoming more and more popular among those who enjoy them.

Snowboarding protective gear is very important, as it can prevent the snowboarder from getting injured. Among the devices meant to offer protection, such as helmets, pads, or other guards, snowboards goggles are an essential piece of equipment. The role of snowboards goggles is to protect your eyes from the bright sunlight reflected by the snow. Snowboards goggles are also extremely useful when it comes to protecting the eyes against the cold wind or against snow. Anyone who is interested in protective devices for snowboarding can find them at an online snowboarding shop, which also sells equipment for skateboarding.

No snowboarder should underestimate the importance of wearing snowboarding protective gear, including snowboards goggles. On bright days, and at high altitudes, the snow reflects the strong sunlight and anyone who is snowboarding can get snow blindness. The effect of the reflecting snow can damage your sight greatly, so make sure you’re wearing snowboards goggles whenever you practice your favorite sport. Such eyewear, which is available to purchase from an online snowboarding shop, is also helpful when it comes to preventing wind or snow getting into eyes and temporarily affecting your vision. In this way, snowboards goggles will protect you from all types of injuries you risk when you’re high up on the mountain slopes.

Wearing the right outfit is essential, whether you prefer snowboarding or skateboarding. While snowboarding protective gear like snowboards goggles and helmets are indispensable for your safety, so are skateboards clothes for those who are keen on this sport. While skateboards clothes may seem much like a matter of fashion, they are actually much more important. You may want to go only for skateboards clothes you like as far as design is concerned. However, you should bear in mind that your outfit must help you practice your favorite sport, and not impede you or put you at serious risk of injury.

You can shop for your skateboarding outfit at an online snowboarding shop, which offers apparel for all types of alternative sports. When you choose the items of your outfit, you should bear in mind that skateboards clothes must be first and foremost comfortable, so that you have a lot of freedom of movement to perform your tricks. Your skateboards clothes should be loose, because tight ones might feel uncomfortable and put unnecessary strain on your muscles and joints. At the same time, your skateboards clothes mustn’t be too loose, so that you don’t risk them getting caught on various things.

Choosing the most suitable skateboards clothes is easy if you start browsing the catalog of an online snowboarding shop. Apart from snowboarding protective gear, which includes padding, helmets and snowboards goggles, such a shop will have a special section for skateboards clothes. The items available include casual shirts, T-shirts and shorts, which come in a variety of models and designs. You can easily decide which brand best fits your taste, and also find other useful items of equipment for skateboarding, such as decks, shoes, helmets or pads. Doing your shopping in one place means you will be able to get a matching outfit, in the colors and designs you prefer.

It’s very important that you find the right equipment to wear while practicing your favorite sport, be it snowboarding or skateboarding. By visiting an online snowboarding shop, which provides both skateboards clothes and snowboarding protective gear like pads, helmets or snowboards goggles, you will be able to browse through various brands and models and make up your mind as to what suits you best. When choosing your outfit, there are two things you should bear in mind. The first one is your own safety: go for the devices that you are sure will offer you the best protection. The second one is style: try to shape your image as a snowboarder or skateboarder through the outfit you choose to wear.

An extreme winter sport, snowboarding can cause injuries to the rider that could be as small as innocent and minor slips or as harsh as crashes that have a high impact and the consequences could be rather dire. The newcomer to snowboarding is often the most vulnerable and gets injured even while undertaking less risky maneuvers. All this implies that the snowboarder requires protective snowboarding gear and this is more relevant to snowboarders that have not yet learned how to keep a stable stance on a snowboard and so face more threat of being injured.
In fact, it is believed that as many as 25% of injuries take place during the first experience a snowboarder has with snowboarding and nearly 50% take place during the first season.
First Time Snowboarders
First time snowboarders as well as regular snowboarders need protective gear and some of these are snowboard wrist guards, snowboard knee pads, snowboard hip pads, snowboard helmets, and a safety leash. The most common of all injuries that can be sustained by snowboarders is the wrist injury, which may be caused when one slips backwards or lands on the hands and the hard impact may cause sprains or fractures.
Protective gear such as Snowboard Specific Wrist Guards are ideal in preventing injuries as it can ease the force of the fall on the joints of the upper body. When hard collisions, such as hitting a tree or impacting from unexpected angles or turning motions occurs, the knees may get injured and so one needs protective snowboarding gear such as knee pads to help prevent contusions.
Another protective snowboarding gear that is used by snowboarders to cushion the fall as well as keep the seat warm and dry is the hip pad which is stretchable and can be pulled on like biked shorts. The extra padding in the backside of the Snowboard Hip Pads prevents tailbone bruises and the beginning snowboarder who does not wish to purchase such protective snowboarding gear may even rent out snowboard hip pads for the first few days of riding on the slopes.
It should be kept in mind that even professional riders use protective snowboarding gear such as hip pads, especially when trying out new moves in the halfpipe and terrain parks.
Sometimes the snowboarder may crash with natural objects such as hard snow or ice surface conditions or rocks and trees and this may result in serious injuries. This means that one should use protective snowboarding gear such as a helmet, even if one is very able and has high level of expertise.
Finally, one may need another protective snowboarding gear called the safety leash, which is a safety must and is essentially a non-releasing strap that can be wrapped around the leg to prevent the snowboard from getting away accidentally.
