<p>If you are adventurous enough and wish to climb a rock, but not sure about the techniques involved in rock climbing, then indoor climbing can be a better option for you. Indoor climbing is an easy way to learn various techniques involved in rock climbing under the guidance of experienced and professional climbers. These man made climbing walls are designed in such a way that they resemble the characteristics of the natural rock environment. This indoor climbing experience is really exciting and due to this many rock climbers don&#8217;t even opt for the outdoors. <p>Protection: spring-loaded or static metal devices designed to be inserted into rock cracks or other irregular surfaces. Protection is placed as the climber ascends; the climber clips the rope into the protection. The protection works in tandem with the belayer to prevent the climber from hitting the ground in the event of a fall.<br />&#13;</p>

<p>Climbers usually work in pairs, with one climbing and the other belaying. In lead climbing, the belayer feeds rope to the lead climber through a belay device. The leader climbs up, occasionally placing protection or clipping preplaced bolted hangers, until the top is reached. The belayer is ready to &#8220;lock off&#8221; the rope if the leader falls.<br />&#13;</p>
<p>Both climbers attach the rope to their climbing harness, usually tying into their harness with a figure-eight knot or double bowline knot. The leader either places protection or clips into permanent protection already attached to the rock. In traditional climbing, the protection is removable. Usually nuts or Spring-loaded camming device (often referred to as &#8220;cams&#8221; or &#8220;friends&#8221;) are set in cracks in the rock (although pitons are sometimes used). In sport climbing the protection is metal loops called hangers. Hangers are secured to the rock with either expanding masonry bolts taken from the construction industry, or by placing glue-in bolt systems. In ice climbing the protection is Ice Screw or similar devices hammered or screwed into the ice by the leader, and removed by the second climber.<br />&#13;</p>
<p>The lead climber typically connects the rope to the protection with carabiners or quickdraws. If the lead climber falls, he will fall twice the length of the rope out from the last protection point, plus rope stretch (typically 5% to 8% of the rope out), plus slack. If any of the gear breaks or pulls out of the rock or if the belayer fails to lock off the belay device immediately, the fall will be significantly longer. Thus if a climber is 2 meters above the last protection he will fall 2 meters to the protection, 2 meters below the protection, plus slack and rope stretch, for a total fall of over 4 meters.<br />&#13;</p>
<p>If the leader falls, the belayer arrests the rope. This is achieved by running the rope through a belay device attached to the belayer&#8217;s harness. The belay device runs the rope through a series of sharp curves that, when operated properly, greatly increase the friction and stop the rope from running. Some of the more popular types of belay devices are the ATC Belay Device, the Figure 8 and various auto-locking belay devices such as the Petzl Gri-Gri<br />&#13;</p>
<p>At the top of the pitch, the leader sets up a secure anchor system, also called a belay, from where he can belay as his partner climbs. The second climber removes the gear from the rock (traditional climbing) or removes the quickdraw from the bolted hanger (sport climbing). Both climbers are now at the top of the pitch with all their equipment. Note that the second is protected from above while climbing, but the leader is not, so being the leader is more challenging and dangerous. After completing their climb, with both climbers at the top of the pitch, they must eventually rappel or otherwise descend the climb in order to return to their starting point.<br />&#13;</p>
<p>Occasionally, climbers may decide to &#8220;move together&#8221;, a risky but speedy technique also called simul-climbing, in which both leader and second move at the same time without stopping to belay. The leader &#8211; approximately a rope length above the second &#8211; usually places multiple pieces of protection as he climbs so that the weight of the second climber might arrest a possible leader&#8217;s fall. Should it be the second climber to fall, however, the leader may be pulled from his holds, with potentially unpleasant results.</p>

Two of the most common styles are: The Traditional and Sport style. Rock climbers use other styles too. Most of them prefer to use the style that suits them the best.  This article will provide you with the different styles of rock climbing and its features.<br />
Traditional style:<br />
Traditional rock climbing is also commonly known amongst climber as  trad climbing.  A traditional rock climber is known as trad climber. This style involves exploration and establishment of new routes. This style requires a lot of skill including self control, gear placement, route finding, down hill climbing, etc. This style came into existence before the sport style of climbing. This style is unaided with permanent anchors to help while ascending. It is more physically and mentally challenging than sport climbing. A trad climber uses a rope and places nuts and hexes in crevices to ensure safety.<br />
Sport style:<br />
Sport style of climbing unlike traditional climbing lets the climber use permanent anchors for protection. These anchors are fixed to the rock face to assist the climb. Sport climbing requires gymnastics abilities, endurance and strength. Sport climbing is safer compared to traditional climbing. The gear too is different. It includes bolts and quick draws i.e. a small sling, which has carabiners on both ends. Sport climbing can be both indoor as well as outdoor. Indoor sport climbing developed because climbers wanted to practice climbing throughout the year.<br />
Bouldering:<br />
This style of climbing requires the climber to have great strength, endurance and concentration. The climber needs to use all these skills to work a way through the boulder route. This style is more dangerous and requires experience. This style is practiced indoors as well as the outdoors.  While bouldering, climbers usually do not get their feet a couple of feet above the ground surface. Bouldering does not include any ropes or belay placed at the bas of the cliff. The only gear required for this type of rock climbing is shoes, crash pad and chalk. Bouldering involves a series of problems known as routes. These routes are series of moves a climber needs to practice over and over again. Additional moves will increase the challenge. It is advised that bouldering should not be done at great heights.<br />
Solo style:<br />
The solo climbing style is the most dangerous style of climbing. It is also considered by most of the climber as the freest style of climbing. This is so because the climbers climb alone i.e. without any partner, protection or rope. This style of climbing is best left to the experts. The main aim of such a climb is to reach the summit.<br />
Ice climbing:<br />
As the name suggests, this style of rock climbing includes climbing on ice. One does not need to be told that it is going to a cold climb. Ice climbing means climbing a vertical wall of ice and this ice wall may be formed by a frozen waterfall. The tools required for ice climbing are quite different from the tools used in the other styles of climbs.</p>

<p>Indoor climbing is a sport that deals with both the body and mind. It takes a lot of will power to be able to withstand the challenges it gives and the mere determination to reach the goal of reaching the top. Yet, there is a lot to learn with regards to the art of indoor climbing.Indoor climbing is an increasingly famous type of rock climbing that is done by the use of artificial structures that imitate the feeling of climbing a rocky mountain. Yet, this is in a controlled surrounding as compared to the dangerous but adventurous sport of outdoor rock climbing.</p>
<p>&#13;The idea of the artificial indoor climbing wall originated in United Kingdom, where Don Robinson, a professor of Physical Education of The Leeds University created DR Climbing Walls in 1964. He made this possible by inserting rocks into a wall on a corridor. It was commercially introduced and constructed in Sheffield which is now considered as the heart of Indoor Climbing.</p>
<p>&#13;The first indoor walls were made of bricks, giving a smaller choice of routes. This is since the steepness of the wall and variety of the hand holds was limited. It was later on changed to wooden walls. It was constructed by screwing the resin hand holds which acts as the artificial rocks. The boards vary in steepness and in height where the different sizes of resin holds are attached, making it more like the sport that it was derived from.</p>
<p>&#13;The climbing walls are made out of wood or bricks. This is although recently, multiplex boards became the material used. It is thick and safe to climb. Aside from this, it is where resin rocks are attached. Nowadays; aluminum and steel are also used.</p>
<p>&#13;These climbing walls have various types and this would include the following: Plywood is one type, which is said to be the simplest type used in the structure of climbing walls. The other forms of climbing walls aside from the ones mentioned above are made of concrete sprayed into a wire mesh, slabs of granite, pre-made fiberglass panels and fiberglass walls. The rocks attached to the climbing walls also vary and may be made out of limestone, granite or artificial rocks. Hence, whatever type of climbing wall or rocks is used, belay ropes should be attached to the climber for protection. Aside from this, it is also used for bouldering and lead climbing.</p>
<p>&#13;Indoor climbing has also become popular in areas with rainy climates, where in, it is much safer as compared to outdoor rock climbing. This is due to the fact that this kind of weather makes it very difficult to climb a rocky mountain. It will just make it slippery and dangerous, unlike indoor climbing where anyone could go to the gym despite their busy schedules. This can also be for any season and anytime of the day, giving the climbers the chance to enjoy their sport, even at night.</p>
<p>&#13;Moreover, indoor wall climbing is less dangerous for it is within controlled vicinity and it is manmade and created to be environmentally safe. In fact, people can celebrate parties inside a wall climbing area. Aside from being evidently fun, it is also definitely hassle free. It is also easier than outdoor rock climbing. Even so, it is almost the same in such a way that gears and skills that should be combined with analytical thinking are still necessary in this kind of sport. This makes it as difficult as outdoor rock climbing. Plus, it is the reason why indoor climbing is considered as a type of sport, just like outdoor rock climbing.</p>
<p>&#13;What are the benefits of Indoor climbing? Aside from the fact that it is safer than outdoor rock climbing, it is also like a training ground for outdoor rock climbing. You can also lose a lot of weight with this sport, without even noticing it. It is simply a fun environment and an amazing outlet to burn fats in the process. This is since it involves intense muscular activity just by climbing up and down the walls, especially if you are carrying the gears as well. Thus, some indoor climbers who have recently tried the sport later found themselves loving it.</p>
<p>&#13;Although indoor climbing gears are expensive, beginners of this kind of sport can always rent one in the gym itself. Then, you can save and buy the gears when you get hooked up on the sport. This is better than buying all the pricey equipment and realizing it&#8217;s not for you. Yet, even if these gears cost a lot, it will keep you protected; prevent you from falling or getting injured.</p>
<p>&#13;Here are the gears needed in this kind of sport:</p>
<p>&#13; Rock Climbing shoes &#8211; This is an essential climbing gear for a climber. It is chosen depending on the kind of rocks that are being used in climbing walls, as well as the type of climbing walls and climbing typ. This is if you are climbing: for a competition, in a gym, for bouldering, as a sport or for mountaineering practice. Thus, the types of rubber, lacing material and curvature, shape and heel construction should also be considered.</p>

It has a measurement of 4 ½ to 10 inches when it comes to the distance. The other carabiner is in a bending position while the other carabiner is straight.</p>
<p>&#13; Crash Pads &#8211; This is similar to the gymnastics mats that are used in outdoor bouldering. Aside from this, it is used as a protection from falling. Crash pads have certain features such as: hiking shoulder straps, pockets, like straps, launch pads and many more.</p>
<p>&#13; Fingerboard &#8211; This training device can be placed where there is limited space and can be mounted on top of a doorway. It is a training device for finger strength training.</p>
<p>&#13; Child&#8217;s Harness &#8211; An adult&#8217;s harness is very much different from a child&#8217;s harness. This is due to the fact that it is smaller as compared to the adults. It also has smaller leg sizes and waists. They are also divided into 2 distinct types which would be the child&#8217;s waist harness and the full body harness.</p>
<p>&#13; Chalk Bags &#8211; A chalk bag is needed and is definitely considered as one of the needed climbing gears a climber must have handy. It serves as a type of protection or prevention against dangerously falling while climbing. This is worn by strapping it around a climber&#8217;s waist and attaching it to the middle part of the back, particularly the butt part. After Walter Parry Haskett Smith climbed Napes Needle alone for the first time, many people were attracted and it later converted to sports in England, in 1880s and by 1930s some two hundred climbing resorts opened in the Elbsandstein region. As the sport evolved grading system was introduced to analyze different levels of difficulties while climbing. Both the safety equipments and climbing techniques have been evolved with the passage of time.<br />
A climber should be mentally and physically be strong to overcome difficulties and having extensive knowledge can make the task easier. Initially the climbers can learn in pairs, while one learns to climb the other can belay or feed the rope from either end of the rock structure. Incase the climber falls, the belayer can lock off the rope. When multiple climbers climb, the leader can connect a rope with carabiners or quickdraws as a protection measure. A more risky method, simul-climbing, involves the leader and the team members to move at the same time, giving less time to belay the rope.<br />
There are many variations to the traditional rock climbing. They can be broadly classified into free climbing and aid climbing. Climbers do not use any kind of equipment in free climbing and in aid climbing; equipments are used to support the weight of the body against the rocks, which have less natural formation.<br />
In lead climbing, the leader of the group of climber ties the rope to his body and starts to climb the rock structure first, followed by his other team members who have the same rope tied to their individual bodies. <p>Do you find yourself getting burned out on rock climbing?  Year after year I see all kinds of people join our climbing community and become completely addicted to rock climbing.  It doesnt take long though for a lot of these climbers to get burned out. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
It is kinda strange they become so psyched and all of a sudden you stop seeing them around the gym and at the crag.  </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Well have much contemplation and application I have finally figured out how to stay totally psyched on climbing without ever getting burned out.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
First what is it that burns rock climbers out?</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
The two biggest reasons that climbers get burned out are a lack of variety in their climbing and the fact that they never take a break from rock climbing.  </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
So now that we understand that let me give you the 7 ways to not get burned out on rock climbing.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
1. Climb with rock climbers that are motivating you and that you have fun with.  It is essential that those you climb with motivate you and make climbing fun for you.  Nothing is worse than climbing with someone that is constantly complaining and killing your psyche.  I also find that I like to climb with people that like to joke around a lot. It makes it a lot more fun for me.</p>

2. Get out of the darn gym.  I know gym is great you have the project in there but a lot of people become burned out because they are gym rats.  Get your butt out of the gym, get out in nature and climb outside.  I do not care how far from the crag you are I used to have to drive 6+ hours one way to go climbing outside.  Trust me just do it.  </p>

3. Take a road trip. Getting out to new areas can not only be motivating but a great time to meet new climbers from all over.  One of the best things about road trips is the experience.  When I lived in Florida road trips are what kept me sane as a climber.  Oh and by the way you do not need to go to a different area every time but I recommend mixing it up.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
4. Try different styles of climbing.  A lot of the climbers that I see who are not psyched on climbing anymore were just boulderers or sport climbers.  Mix up the styles of climbing try trad climbing, go bouldering, or go clip some bolts on a few sport routes.  Whatever you do mix things up that way when you are not to psyched on bouldering you can just go trad climbing.  Or if you need a change from trad climbing go sport climbing.  I promise this will help a ton and that is why I do everything from bouldering, trad, sport, soloing, rope jumping and even buildering.  It always gives me something to stay psyched on.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
5. Take a break from climbing.  I honestly think it is a really good idea to take at least 2-4 weeks of from climbing every year.  Just take a break and do something else.  This gives you a chance to refresh your mind and rejuvenate your body.  I like to keep my body in shape by still working out 3 days a week and running 2-3 days a week as well, but stop climbing.</p>

6. Keep yourself motivated by setting goals for yourself.  Find routes or boulder problems that inspire you and that you want to climb.  Make sure the line and the movement inspires you as you will most likely be on it a lot and if you are not inspired you will not enjoy yourself.  Having these goals give you great motivation and an awesome sense of accomplishment that cant be put in words.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
7. Finally just have fun with your rock climbing.  Rock climbing is meant to be fun dont be all serious about it.  Remember why you climb and stay with that.<br />&#13;<br />
So  the next time you start to feel like your getting burned out on rock climbing put any of these 7 tips into practice and I promise you will get more motivated on climbing almost instantly.</p>
